We've Gone Mobile

After many late nights coding, lots of coffee and many tests we've gone mobile. We are starting with our Apple App for both the iPhone and iPad. We will be launching an Android version in the new year!

Rule of Change

Whenever you're editing a scene you need to constantly look out for bad jump cuts. One way to help prevent jumpy, bad cuts is to follow what some refer to as the rule of change or as others refer to it as the 30 degree rule.

There are three things to consider:

  • Camera Angle

  • Camera Height

  • Image Frame/Frame size

  • First check to see if the camera/shots are at a 30-45 degrees angle or more. This will help establish a new visual image for your audience and will give them a chance to readjust. Next check to see if the height of the camera changes the perspective. Finally see if the frame size changes from a WS to a CU or vice versa. This will lead to enough of a change so that your audience doesn't get the sense that things are slightly off.

    IMPORTANT

As in any instance your choice in cuts should always be audience or character driven, not simply because the angle or frame changes. As with anything rules are made to be broken and if the cut works without following one or more of these rules then it works!
